Introduction:
Risk is a matter of fact. It exists in one form or another for every organization and for every task. Some of these risks may result in damage to the health and safety of staff or third parties.
Legislation in the area of Health and Safety places responsibilities on organizations to identify and manage potential risks. This requires a system to be in place which positively encourages staff to look out for and work to reduce risks in the workplace.
This course sets out to provide a simple approach which will satisfy these legal requirements.
Aim:
To provide the skills and knowledge needed to contribute effectively to a risk assessment programme.
Participants:
All managers and supervisors, plus others with specific responsibility for Health and Safety matters.
Objectives:
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
- Identify the implications for their organization of the Health and Safety at Work Act in the area of risk assessment;
- Follow a structured approach to the identification of risks;
- Identify how risks at work can be sensibly managed and reduced through the introduction of appropriate control measures.
Content:
- Principles of risk assessment.
- Selecting appropriate control measures.
- The impact of legislation.
- The costs and benefits of risk assessment in practice.
- Implementing a programme of risk assessment.
- Measuring the extent and variety of risks.
Style:
As well as inputs and discussions this course involves participants in performing a risk assessment in a controlled situation followed by a critical review.
Duration:
The course lasts for one day.
Note:
This course would be a valuable learning experience for a complete Safety Committee if run in-house.
Optional Examination:
Chartered Institute of Environmental Health Level 2 Certificate in Principles of Risk Assessment. Examination cost: £12.50 per candidate.
Candidates are assessed by an examination paper consisting of 30 multiple choice questions to be completed in one hour under examination conditions. Candidates must participate in at least 80% of the course to be eligible to take the examination. Candidates who achieve 20 or more correct answers will pass the examination and receive a certificate.
