Introduction:
Many staff need to gain accurate information from others. This includes staff selection, disciplinary matters and problem solving. Doing this effectively is difficult. We need to know how to structure the interview to achieve the goal; and how to encourage the other person to talk freely with honest information.
The most effective interviewers deploy a range of skills and knowledge to reach their ends. This course sets out to share them.
Aim:
To develop the skills and knowledge to permit participants to run effective interviews.
Participants:
All staff who need to interview others as part of their job whether for selection, disciplinary or other purposes.
Objectives:
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
- Prepare effectively for different types of interview;
- Organize the setting to encourage direct and well-structured communications;
- Ask effective questions and probe responses to ensure a proper understanding is gained;
- Maintain control to achieve the identified objective;
- Choose between a variety of approaches according to the situation and the other person involved;
- Write a clear, useful post-interview report.

- Determining the goal
- What makes for a good interview
- Preparing the structure and arrangements
- Keeping control of the flow
- Asking questions to gain and confirm information
- Taking notes to permit effective reporting
Style:
An experienced interviewer and facilitator will provide input and lead discussions. In addition participants will practice the kinds of interviews they conduct at work and receive expert feedback on their performance.
Duration:
The course lasts for one day.
