You are here: Managing People Short Workshops - The Newly Appointed Manager (Five days)

The Newly Appointed Manager (Five days)

Introduction
The programme will be of benefit to both newly appointed managers and to experienced managers who have received no formal training. It consists of six individual one-day courses over six months linked to form 'The Newly Appointed Manager' programme.

The one-day workshops can be taken individually. Employers requiring in-house programmes can select from a range of essential management skills to build their own customised programme at no extra cost.

Together the whole programme will enable delegates to understand the purpose, function and processes of management building into a toolkit of essential skills using real-life examples, scenarios and techniques to enable you to manage with confidence.

The programme will allow you to further develop skills to manage your work, achieve objectives, set priorities and reduce stress. The programme will also introduce you to the skills and techniques needed to manage people, to communicate, delegate and lead an efficient team. In addition the programme will enhance your own personal attitudes to management and show you how to prepare action plans for ongoing professional management development.

Delivery of sessions uses a mix of workshops, active participation and group discussion to allow the development of knowledge to be fully absorbed and used quickly and easily in the work place.

After each course delegates will be given work based tasks to use the skills and techniques learnt. Each task will be assessed by our professional team of management trainers to ensure the knowledge gained is fully understood and transferred to the place of work.

All delegates on the programme are provided with comprehensive course notes and exercises.

Role of the Manager, Leadership and Delegation
The manager needs to know their role and what duties they should lead on and those they can delegate to others. This course is about people working together - developing an efficient team must be a prime responsibility for all who manage groups of people. The course will help the manager understand their role, how to lead a team, how to delegate and how to develop an effective team.

Communication Skills
People must be able to communicate effectively to achieve success. They need to communicate with staff, to brief them clearly, to gain their commitment. They need to be able to elicit relevant information known to their managers, their colleagues or staff (even when others who do not want to communicate). They must know how to write clear, concise memos, letters and reports, how to organise and give a short but effective talk, how to contribute usefully to a meeting and how to handle incoming paperwork efficiently.

Time and Priority Management
The most valuable resource is time and you need to manage it and yourself efficiently. It is a common complaint that 'there are not enough hours in the day' yet a typical manager devotes the majority of available time to low priority work. The potential to achieve more in your job and career is partly dependent upon time and priority management. Delegates will be given a series of individual exercises and guidance in improving their use of time.

Motivation and Coaching
This course is about what motivates individuals and how coaching people can improve their efficiency and job satisfaction. It focuses both upon our understanding of individuals and ourselves in relation to important aspects of job situations. Motivation is defined in terms of performance and is placed in perspective of trends in work and society.

Team Building
Organisations are about people working together and, therefore, developing effective teams must be a prime responsibility for all who manage groups of people. This programme will help you to develop your team more effectively. It is suitable for team leaders, existing and potential team leaders, supervisors and managers.

Training the Team
Anyone can be a trainer - but not everyone can train others effectively. As a manager you will be called upon to train staff. The workshop will provide participants with an understanding of the process of learning and an appreciation of different approaches and methods for training. You will gain practical experience in designing and delivering a training programme using appropriate techniques and aids. Participants will be involved in exercises and practical work throughout giving the opportunity to gain experience in a safe environment. Candidates will produce and deliver a short training session using a range of typical training equipment.

This course lasts for five days. Option of 5 consecutive days or one day a month over 5 months.
