Appraisals mean many things and allow for individual or group assessment of a person’s performance in the place of work. In business there are three main schemes: traditional line manager-employee appraisal; upward appraisal where staff comment on their own manager’s performance; and finally the 360 Appraisal which brings together all interested parties to comment on the individual performance of the manager or staff member undertaking the performance review.

An example of a 360 appraisal approach can be found on this web site where if you are a manager your staff can comment on your performance over three main areas of behavior focusing on Leadership, Communication and Customer Orientation. The process of 360 appraisal offers managers or staff in general an opportunity to learn more about themselves and a means to gain meaningful feedback on their performance.
